Dear Families,
Welcome to Woodlawn Beach Middle School! I am very excited to be your child’s math teacher this year. This is my fourth year teaching this course at WBMS, and I am looking forward to a great school year! The skills and understandings that students will gain during the 6th grade are very important for college and career readiness. Many topics we cover this year will remain a major emphasis throughout middle school and into high school.
We will be using the McGraw-Hill Florida Math 6th grade textbook this year. The book is in the consumable format, and students will work through sections of the book. Students will have a section at a time in their folder. The books will be stored in my classroom.
Daily supplies needed for class
-Student Planner
-Pencils (with eraser)
-Class folder/binder
-Loose leaf paper or a notebook/composition book
Grading Policy
10% Homework
25% Classwork and Participation
25% Quizzes
40% Tests
Students will learn content in a variety of different ways, including lectures, videos, reading, and other activities. Throughout the course of the year, assignments and projects may be given the value of an assignment from any of the four grading categories.
In the second and fourth quarters of the year, we will have a semester exam. This exam will count as a test grade for those quarters, and will be factored into that quarter’s grade. Language is being developed by the district regarding an absenteeism policy. This policy will impact the method used to calculate semester grades. We will communicate this policy as soon as it is finalized.
Extra Credit problems will appear on many tests and quizzes. I will also periodically give extra credit assignments. Students will sometimes have the opportunity to earn back test points by doing test corrections.
